What to know before the next one

Australian Football: eighteen a side on a huge oval, no offside, and a ball you can kick, punch or run with as long as you bounce it. Four tall posts at each end — through the middle two is a goal worth six, either outer pair is a behind worth one.

The events that matter

AFL Grand Final — Every year, late September. Held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in front of about 100,000 people. A public holiday in Victoria.
AFL home-and-away season — March to August. Eighteen clubs, most of them from Melbourne.
AFL Women's — Every season. The professional women's competition, launched in 2017.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the marks. Catch a kick that has travelled 15 metres and you get an uncontested shot — that single rule shapes the whole game.
Watch how the ground is used sideways. With no offside, teams switch play across the width of the oval to find space.
Watch a player run with the ball. They must bounce it every 15 metres, which is why sprints look oddly interrupted.
Watch the ruck contest at each restart — two very tall players jumping for the tap.

Where it is played

Overwhelmingly Australian, and within Australia strongest in Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania. Small but real amateur leagues exist in Ireland, the United States, Britain, New Zealand and South Africa.

Who plays it, and from what age

Junior football starts around age five in modified non-contact form. AFL players are among the fittest endurance athletes in team sport — a midfielder can cover 13 kilometres in a match.

Who sets the standard

Melbourne clubs dominate the history books; Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood and Richmond have the biggest supporter bases.

Words you will hear

mark — A clean catch from a kick of 15 metres or more. Earns a free kick.
behind — One point, scored through the outer posts or off a defender.
specky — A spectacular mark taken by climbing on an opponent's back.
the ruck — The tall players who contest the bounce restarts.
