The field guide

What to know before the next one

Running, jumping and throwing — the oldest competitive sport there is, and still the centrepiece of every Olympic Games. Track events from 100 metres to 10,000, field events from the shot put to the pole vault, plus road and cross-country running.

The events that matter

Five things to watch the first time

Where it is played

Universal. The United States, Kenya, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Britain, Japan and increasingly Uganda, Botswana and Norway are the strongest.

Who plays it, and from what age

School athletics is where most people first meet the sport. Sprinters typically peak in their mid-twenties, distance runners later, and masters competition runs decade by decade well past eighty.

Who sets the standard

The United States across the whole programme; Jamaica in the sprints; Kenya and Ethiopia in distance running.

The South African angle

South Africa has produced world and Olympic champions in the sprints, middle distance and field events, and Caster Semenya, Wayde van Niekerk and Akani Simbine are household names. The schools athletics system remains one of the country's strongest talent pipelines.

The skills this sport is built on

Sprint mechanics · The relay exchange · A jump (high/long/pole vault) · A throw (shot/discus/javelin) · Hurdle technique · Distance pacing / the kick

Then take it beyond athletics & running
