A competitive sport, not a sideline act. Teams perform a two-and-a-half-minute routine of stunts, pyramids, tumbling and jumps, scored on difficulty and execution. The throws are as high as anything in gymnastics and there is no mat underneath — just teammates.
Dominated by the United States, with strong programmes in Japan, Canada, Britain, Finland, Chile, Mexico, Thailand and Australia. The International Olympic Committee granted the sport full recognition in 2021.
Teams run from around age five in tiny divisions through to open adult. It is one of the highest-participation youth sports for girls in the United States, with growing male participation in stunt roles.
