What to know before the next one

Golf with flying discs. Tee off, throw down a fairway, and finish by landing the disc in a chain basket. Same scoring as golf — fewest throws wins — and the same obsession with equipment and wind.

The events that matter

PDGA World Championships — Every year. The world titles, run by the Professional Disc Golf Association.
Disc Golf Pro Tour — Every season. The elite circuit, mostly in the United States.
European Open — Every two years. The biggest event outside North America.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the disc's flight shape. Backhand throws curve one way, forehand the other, and elite players use both deliberately.
Watch which disc they pull out. Drivers, midranges and putters fly completely differently and players carry twenty of them.
Watch the putting from inside ten metres. That is where tournaments are actually decided.
Watch the wind and the trees. Course design here is about obstacles, not distance.

Where it is played

The United States and Finland are the two great strongholds — Finland has more courses per head than anywhere. Estonia, Sweden, Norway, Japan and Britain are growing fast.

Who plays it, and from what age

Cheap and gentle enough to start at any age. PDGA divisions run from under-eight to over-eighty, and courses are usually free to play.

Who sets the standard

The United States and Finland dominate the professional ranks.

Words you will hear

an ace — A hole in one.
the circle — Ten metres around the basket, where putting rules change.
hyzer / anhyzer — Throwing with the disc angled down or up, to make it curve.
the chains — The basket's chain assembly, which catches the disc.
