What to know before the next one

Field hockey: eleven a side, a stick with one flat face, and a hard ball on artificial turf. Fast, technical, and full of set pieces — the penalty corner is a rehearsed routine that decides most tight matches.

The events that matter

Olympic Games hockey — Every four years. Men's and women's tournaments, and the sport's biggest stage.
FIH Hockey World Cup — Every four years. The world titles.
FIH Pro League — Every season. A home-and-away international league between the top nations.
Africa Cup for Nations — Every four years. The continental championship, and South Africa's usual route to Olympic and World Cup qualification.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the penalty corner. It is a set play with a designated stopper, striker and defenders charging — rehearsed for hours.
Watch the stick. Only the flat side may touch the ball, which is why reverse-stick skills look so awkward and matter so much.
Watch for the ball being lifted. A raised ball in a dangerous area is an offence, which shapes how players shoot.
Watch the quarters. Four periods with breaks means teams reset tactically four times.

The Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Australia, India, Argentina, England, Spain and South Africa. India's hockey history is the sport's deepest.

Who plays it, and from what age

A major school sport in South Africa from primary level. Club hockey runs into masters categories past sixty.

Who sets the standard

The Netherlands and Belgium in the men's game; the Netherlands and Argentina in the women's.

The South African angle

Hockey is one of South Africa's strongest school and university sports, with both national sides regular Olympic and World Cup participants. The domestic Premier Hockey League and the university leagues are the shop windows.

Words you will hear

a penalty corner — The main set piece, awarded for defensive offences inside the circle.
the circle — The D-shaped area in front of goal. Goals can only be scored from inside it.
a green / yellow card — Two-minute and longer suspensions.
a reverse stick — Playing the ball with the stick turned over, on the same flat face.
