What to know before the next one

A board, a large controllable kite and enough wind. Competitive kitesurfing splits into freestyle tricks, big air, wave riding, and course racing on hydrofoils — which is the Olympic discipline and reaches over 40 knots.

The events that matter

Olympic Games kite formula — Every four years. Debuted at Paris 2024 in the hydrofoil racing format.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the kite, not the rider. Where the kite sits in the wind window decides everything the rider can do.
In big air, watch the height and the landing. Judges score how high, how technical, and whether it was ridden away cleanly.
In racing, watch the upwind legs. Hydrofoil racing is won by whoever can point closest to the wind at speed.
Watch the wind strength in the graphic. The same trick in 20 knots and 40 knots are different achievements.

France, the Netherlands, Brazil, Spain, Italy, the United States, Australia and South Africa. Cape Town is one of the sport's global capitals.

Who plays it, and from what age

Schools teach from about twelve with small kites. It is equipment-heavy but the learning curve is shorter than windsurfing.

France, the Netherlands and Brazil in racing and freestyle; South Africa punches well above its weight in big air.

The South African angle

Cape Town is genuinely one of the best kitesurfing destinations on earth — Blouberg and Langebaan draw the world's best every southern summer, and Red Bull King of the Air is held there. South Africa has produced world-class big-air riders.

the wind window — The arc of sky where the kite can fly and pull.
a kiteloop — Sending the kite through a full loop mid-jump. The signature big-air move.
the foil — The underwater wing that lifts the board clear of the surface.
edging — Digging the board's edge in to hold against the kite's pull.
