What to know before the next one

Eleven a side, two halves of 45 minutes, one ball, and the simplest scoring in sport — get it into the net. It is the most played and most watched game on earth, and almost nothing about it needs explaining before you can enjoy it.

The events that matter

FIFA World Cup — Every four years. The biggest single-sport event there is. The 2026 edition is shared by the United States, Canada and Mexico and is the first with 48 teams.
FIFA Women's World Cup — Every four years. Two years offset from the men's.
Africa Cup of Nations — Every two years. The continental championship, and the one where the South African side has the most realistic route to silverware.
UEFA Champions League — Every season, autumn to late spring. Europe's best clubs. The final is the most watched club match of the year.
The domestic leagues — August to May in Europe, August to May in South Africa. The Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga are where most fans actually live week to week.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the shape, not the ball. Where the ten outfield players stand tells you what a team is trying to do.
Watch the ten seconds after possession changes hands. Almost every goal starts in that window.
Watch the runs nobody passes to. A striker dragging a defender away is doing the work that creates the space.
Watch where the goalkeeper stands when play is at the other end. Modern keepers are the first attacker.
Watch set pieces properly — corners and free kicks produce a large share of goals and are the most rehearsed thing on the pitch.

Where it is played

Everywhere. It is the number one sport across nearly all of Europe, South America and Africa, and it is the fastest-growing in the United States, India and China.

Who plays it, and from what age

Organised play typically starts at five or six and runs to veterans' leagues well past fifty. FIFA's Professional Football Report counted 128,694 professional male players at 3,986 clubs across 135 countries in 2023 — a reminder of how few of the millions ever turn professional.

Who sets the standard

Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy and France between them hold most men's World Cups; the United States, Germany and Spain dominate the women's game. At club level the standard is set in England, Spain, Germany and Italy.

The South African angle

The Premier Soccer League is the domestic top flight, and the Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates is the biggest fixture on the South African sporting calendar. Mamelodi Sundowns have been the continent's most consistent club side. Bafana Bafana won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations at home; Banyana Banyana won the women's title in 2022. South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup.

Words you will hear

offside — An attacker cannot be nearer the goal than the last defender at the moment the ball is played to them. It exists to stop players simply loitering at the goal.
clean sheet — A game where your team conceded nothing.
the press — Chasing the other team when they have the ball, to force a mistake high up the field.
nutmeg — Putting the ball through an opponent's legs. Mostly a matter of honour.
injury time — Minutes added at the end of each half to make up for stoppages.
