What to know before the next one

Baseball's close relative, on a smaller diamond with a larger ball and — in fastpitch, the competitive form — an underarm windmill pitch that reaches over 110 km/h from just 13 metres away. Seven innings rather than nine.

The events that matter

WBSC Women's Softball World Cup — Every two years. The premier international championship.
Olympic Games softball — Included at selected Games. Contested in 1996–2008 and again at Tokyo 2020; it returns at Los Angeles 2028.
NCAA Women's College World Series — Every June. The American college championship, with very large television audiences.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the pitcher's windmill. The arm makes a full circle and the ball is released low, so it rises — which is why it is so hard to hit.
Watch the distance. 13 metres and 110 km/h gives a hitter less reaction time than a baseball fastball from 18 metres.
Watch the slap hitters — left-handed batters who start running as they swing.
Watch the seven-inning structure. There is far less time to recover from a bad inning than in baseball.

The United States and Japan are dominant, with Canada, Mexico, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico and South Africa competing internationally.

Who plays it, and from what age

Widely played in schools and social leagues, and slowpitch softball is one of the most popular mixed-gender recreational sports anywhere. Fastpitch is the competitive discipline.

Who sets the standard

The United States and Japan, with Japan winning the most recent Olympic gold.

The South African angle

Softball has a long history in South Africa with a national federation and provincial leagues, and South African teams compete at World Cup qualifying level.
