What to know before the next one

Six a side, three touches per side, and the ball may never be caught or held. Sets are to 25, and the rotation rule means every player must serve and play both front and back — so nobody can hide.

The events that matter

Olympic Games volleyball — Every four years. Men's and women's indoor tournaments.
FIVB Volleyball World Championship — Every four years. The world titles.
Volleyball Nations League — Every season. The annual international league, with a finals week.
Italian and Turkish club leagues — Every season. The strongest professional club competitions in the world.

Five things to watch the first time

Watch the setter. Every attack goes through them, and they touch the ball on almost every point.
Watch the block forming at the net. Two or three players jumping together is what forces attackers to change their shot.
Watch the libero in a different-coloured shirt. They only play in the back, never serve or attack, and are usually the best defender on court.
Watch the rotation. Six players move round one position every time they win serve, which changes the whole formation.

Where it is played

Enormous in Brazil, Italy, Poland, Russia, Turkey, Serbia, Japan, China, the United States and Iran. Poland's men's team fills stadiums.

Who plays it, and from what age

Widely played in schools worldwide. Height matters at elite level, but the libero position exists precisely so shorter players can excel.

Who sets the standard

Brazil, Italy, Poland and the United States in the men's game; Italy, Turkey, Brazil, China and Serbia in the women's.

The South African angle

Volleyball is played in South African schools and universities with a national federation and provincial leagues, and beach volleyball gives it a strong coastal presence.

Words you will hear

the set — The second touch, lifting the ball for an attacker.
a spike — The attacking hit, downward and hard.
the libero — The defensive specialist in a different shirt, restricted to the back court.
a dig — Keeping a spiked ball alive off the floor.
